Hello families!
Monday is Dr.Seuss's birthday! In celebration, we will be doing a Celebration of Life for Dr.Seuss. In order to do so, we will be spending the day researching more information about his life so that we may have information to share during his birthday celebration. We will also be doing Suess-themed math and literacy activities throughout the day. Mrs.Homan will be dressed as her favorite Suess character; who will you dress up as? Come dressed as your favorite character Dr.Seuss on Monday! We had two excellent field trips this past week. Happy Birthday Anchorage and the Public Lands building were really wonderful experiences. Thank you to all of our helpful chaperones; without you we cannot go on these trips! Thank you, thank you! March 5th, which is Thursday, is our last school day before Spring Break. It is also the day we will be doing our second and final market in class. If your child was interested in partaking in this as a business owner they needed to submit their Business Plan last Friday. Please remind your child to take their school money (not real money!) to school on Thursday so that they may purchase products from the vendors again. The last market was really fun and the kids learned a great deal from the experience! Spring photos will also be taken on March 5th so make sure your kiddo arrives at school looking their best! I will be spending Spring Break in Philadelphia to visit a very dear friend and to attend the AMS National Montessori Conference. I am really excited for this opportunity and I cannot wait to bring back photos from my explorations while I am there. John will be traveling with me and I know the kids are excited to see what appears in his journal upon my return. That said, I will miss the first day back to school due to traveling. Please, please prepare your child for this. We have talked about it in class but for the sake of the sub, being that it's right after break, please address this at home as well. We have been working on Africa quite a bit and are preparing for our presentation at the end of the year. Ask your child what they've been working on and what they have learned! In preparation for a few special holiday's that are approaching we are working hard in class on secret projects. I have covered the cost of the majority of them but I need your help! If you could please send in $1 to help out, I would so appreciate it.

Hello families!
Please join us this Thursday evening for Science Night at Denali, from 6:30-8pm. Our school/business partner, the Anchorage Museum, will have a variety of hands-on activities in the MPR and gym. Some teachers may also have activities for students, and there will be a sample science fair display board for students to use as a model for science fair projects. Students need to be accompanied by an adult for this fun and self-directed event. If any parent can volunteer to help with clean up, please contact Helen O'Harra at [email protected] This week we have two field trips, one on Thursday and one on Friday. If you are chaperoning the Friday field trip to the Public Lands building, please make sure that you have your ID on you. You will not be allowed to enter the building without it. We will also be walking through metal detectors on our way inside. Just FYI. Our market last week went so, so well. Thank you for your support at home! We will be doing one more market before spring break on March 5th. Students who created a business may choose to use the same business or create a new one using another business plan. Students who didn't create a business now have one more opportunity to do so. Please help your child with the business plan at home. This is one of two projects for the entire school year that I am expecting work done at home. A few parents at our conferences offered to help pay for a new library chair. The kids have picked apart our beautiful wicker chair and are currently using only the tree stumps to sit on. If you would like to donate to a new chair for our library, we would be so appreciative! Thank you! Christine Homan Hello families!
**** The kids have picked apart our awesome library chair to the point that it will no longer support their weight. The underside has also become damaged from use. Are you handy? Can you help me try to save our comfortable chair? Please let me know if you can, we love this chair being a part of our environment! Thank you! **** I am writing this newsletter a bit earlier due to the fact that I will not be at school on Tuesday, the 17th. I am taking a personal day but I am looking forward to meeting with you for our Parent Teacher Conferences on the 18th and 19th. If you have not confirmed your date and time with me yet, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. We have started a new game in class; Mrs.Homan against the class! Due to difficult behaviors arising lately and a lack of work, we are challenging each other to see who can earn the most points possible each school day. Here's the catch: Mrs.Homan does not want to win this game! Please ask your child to explain how our game works. Here's a talking tip: ask them what or who the "Mystery Person" is. This coming week is kind of a weird one! There is no school Monday, Mrs.Homan is gone Tuesday, half-days on Wednesday and Thursday, and no school on Friday. On Tuesday and Wednesday students will be expected to wrap up any writing projects they have not completed and focus on their Africa research project. On Thursday we will be opening our Market. Please make sure that your child (2nd and 3rd grade only) comes to school prepared with all of their items they have been approved to sell. The kids should also bring any school money or checks that they have saved in case they are interested in purchasing products. We have a lot of field trips coming up in the near future. On Thursday, February 26th we will be going to West High via bus to see, Happy Birthday Anchorage! On Friday, February 27th we will be walking downtown to the Public Lands building and watching the dog races for the start of the Fur Rondezvous. Are you able to chaperone? We are in need of one more chaperone for our Feb.27th field trip and at least 3 more chaperones for Happy Birthday Anchorage! Thank you and as always, please contact me with any questions or concerns! Christine Homan Important Dates: February 16th: No school! This week we will be learning more about the Common Needs of People and focusing in on shelter and transportation for our cultural studies. In math we are working on multiplication, division, and fractions. The first graders are working hard on their basic math facts, including multiplication, addition, and subtraction. Second and third grade have been plugging away at multi-digit multiplication, division, and have started working with fractions with like denominators. Beginning this Monday, Mr.Horning will be taking the kids outside on Monday's from 10:25-11:25 for cross-country skiing. This will take place this week and the two following weeks after conference week. Please make sure that your student has all of their outdoor gear. They should have their snow pants, hats, gloves, boots, and warm winter jacket each day for not only gym but also for recess and in case of emergencies. If you are interested in having access to Keyboarding Without Tears for your 2nd or 3rd grader, please send me an email. I can send you a direct link in order for them to practice their keyboarding skills at home. If you are not receiving the mass text messages that I occasionally send out for reminders or check-in's and you would like to be, please send me an email. I can invite you to join our group. This is a free service and allows me to text everyone that has subscribed at once with important information. With Valentine's Day being this coming weekend, we will be doing a special activity for our families. We will not be having a classroom party but you may send in cards or special treats to share with the other students to exchange at the end of the day on Friday. If you plan on sending in cards, please send cards for all 22 students. **I will be absent Tuesday, February 17th. Thank you, please contact me with any questions or concerns.
