Hi families,
The past week was pretty rough in regards to the kids listening, completing their daily work, and being respectful of the adults around them. With another guest teacher coming for a half day on Tuesday, in the afternoon, I've decided to pull back the freedoms in the classroom based on the behaviors being displayed. If you have questions about what this looks like, please email me or stop by to chat. I would be glad to walk you through what we are doing to reinforce positive work habits and respect in the classroom. I have sent two field trip forms home, please return them by October 7th with $15 dollars for the combined admission for both plays. If you are planning on chaperoning, I will need additional admission for you as well. We will be taking a bus to Aladdin on October 9th and walking to Click, Clack, Moo on November 5th. We currently need at least 3 more chaperones for both field trips. Thank you to Kenyi and Veronica for volunteering! Is your child a third grader? They have the opportunity to apply to be a school mediator. The application went home on Friday. Please have your child fill it out and return it by October 5th to be considered for this important role. It does involve two days of training at the end of October at a nearby church with the other mediators. Parent-Teacher Conferences are approaching quickly! We are introducing a new scheduling system this year. I will be sending this information out shortly. This also means that half-days and another in-service day is just around the corner! Thank you for waiting outside of our classroom door at the end of the day for your child. It helps us to stay on task and to complete our jobs before being dismissed on time. Occasionally it takes us a few minutes longer to finish our responsibilities, thank you for being patient while we finish our important work! If you need to speak with me please get in touch with me either before 8:40am or after 3:45pm. The few minutes before and after school can be hectic. I am almost always at school by 7am and you can always email me at [email protected] to set up a time to meet as well. Have a great week! Christine Homan Important Dates: October 5th: Mediator applications for third graders are due. October 7th: Field trip permission forms and admission are due! October 9th: Aladdin! November 5th: Click, Clack, Moo!

Happy Tuesday!
I swore that I wrote and posted the newsletter for this week but apparently not! Our field trip to the Eagle River Nature Center was amazing, really. Our guide (and rock star parent, Liza) did an amazing job walking us through a bit of the trails, discussing soil profiles, and providing us with a wonderful soil experiment. Did you hear all about it? If you haven't been told about the fish we saw... definitely ask your child! This week we have begun incorporating all components of our work plan; Daily 5, math, science, and culture. All grade levels are expected to complete this work each day during our learning block time which is from 9am until 12pm. We will talk more about this at the Open House on Thursday night. I will walk you through our website (quickly!), talk about classroom expectations for both students and parents, and a few other housecleaning type of things. If you are a returning student/parent, I have changed things slightly this year and it offers an opportunity to talk about it together. With benchmark testing behind us, until winter, we are working hard each and every day in class with a focus on literacy and math. Please encourage your child to do their spelling words each night at home and read 15-20 minutes. This will strengthen their vocabulary and fluency and help them in all academic areas. On our board outside of the classroom door I have posted some pink hearts; this is our wish list board. These are items that would be lovely to have in class and they include things like hand sanitizer, hand soap, and a few Montessori materials that we are lacking in class. I will add to this board as needed throughout the year. A BIG thank you to Olivia's mom, Veronica, for donating an electric sharpener for our room. It's like HEAVEN! Have a wonderful week and as always, stop by or email me to chat! Christine Homan Important Dates: September 18th: Open House, 6:30pm October 9th: Field trip to see Aladdin @ West High, 9am-12pm Hello all,
This week we continued working on our Daily 5 routine and incorporated some math as well. We are just beginning to get into lessons again. The reasoning behind this is to ensure that all students understand and are adequately implementing the classroom expectations and routine for their work. This also includes their recordings of their work in their journals. We are doing refresher lessons right now but we will soon resume where we left off at the end of last year. Thank you for your support and encouragement during this period. Thank you to those who have offered to come in and help out in the classroom. I appreciate your willingness to help out. I promise once we are a few more weeks into the school year and things have settled down I will have a better idea of how to utilize you in the classroom. I do have a parent basket on the shelf near the door and it is one of my goals this year to have a more effective system for you for those times you are available to help. We do have one BIG task (and boring) in the book room. Unfortunately it has not been taken care of and our guided reading books are all out of order. If you would like to help sort out this mess I would love to show you our simple system. This would be a huge help! Our field trip to the Eagle River Nature Center is coming up quickly. If you have not sent in your child's $3, please do so before Wednesday. Have you committed to driving? I have sent out confirmation emails to make sure all of the appropriate paperwork has been submitted. I will be sending home a sheet with preparation topics to go over with your child before sending them on the field trip, we also have been reviewing these in class. **Ask your child what the 5 layers of soil are! We have been working on this in class in preparation for our field trip as well as tying it to the Great Lesson. I am so thrilled with what they've taken away from this so far! In fact, I found two young ladies digging outside on the playground trying to identify the different layers just the other day. Amazing! As always, please email me with any questions, comments, or concerns. Is there something you can contribute to the classroom? Please let me know! I would love to have you!
